NSW LABOR WELCOMES MINING JOBS INCREASE ACROSS REGIONS

September 18, 2019

Shadow Minister for Natural Resources, Paul Scully, has welcomed the increase in the mining workforce across New South Wales over the last financial year.

The NSW Minerals Council has noted figures from Coal Services Pty Ltd shows an increase of 1000 miners cross regional NSW.

The figures show:

  • 500 new miners in the Illawarra lifting the workforce to nearly 3000;
  • 350 new miners in the Hunter lifting the workforce to over 13,000;
  • 150 more miners in the Western Coalfields lifting the workforce to over 3000.

The number of mining jobs in the New England region has remained steady over the last 12 months with a workforce of nearly 3000.

This increase in job opportunities also supports more than 7100 small and medium businesses across NSW that supply mining operations.

Mr Scully said the lift in mining job opportunities across NSW was important for rural and regional communities.

“These are high paying jobs and extremely important to many regional and rural communities.

"Mining workers, their families and those in related businesses in the Hunter, the Illawarra, Western NSW and New England regions have played, and will continue to play, a vital role in the economy, providing jobs and generating income from exports", he said.

Mr Scully said that mining jobs were particularly important to keep regional and rural communities and economies during the current drought.
