New School Zone on the way for Towradgi

20 January 2026

Pedestrians and motorists travelling in Towradgi will experience safer journeys with a new school zone being introduced this month.

A 40 km/h school zone will be introduced for Wollongong Flexible Learning Centre on Towradgi Road, the Princes Highway, Caldwell Avenue and John Street to improve safety for the students, community and motorists.

The school zone will operate during the standard morning school zone hours of 8am to 9.30am.  To better align with the school’s schedule, the afternoon operating hours will be 1.30pm to 3pm.

The new speed zone will be in effect from 27 January 2026.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control during the installation of signs.

The Minns Labor Government is committed to creating safer roads for everyone and appreciates the community’s understanding as we work together to reduce road trauma.

Quote attributable to Member for Wollongong Paul Scully:

“The school qualified for a school zone as it directly accesses a public road and met the requirements of the NSW Speed Zoning Standards.

“The western boundary of Wollongong Flexible Learning Centre has direct access to the Princes Highway so this change will allow students and their families to get to and from school safely during busy periods on our roads.

“There were three crashes within this length of road in the five years to September 2024 and while the changes will add just a few seconds to motorists’ travel times, they will importantly help protect children at times and places where they are often present in high numbers.

“Children are among our most vulnerable road users and the Minns Government is committed to making sure that they can travel safely to and from school every day.

“I thank the community for their understanding as we work together to make our roads safer.”
